The latest version of Mass Image Compressor on macOS is 2.3. We will discuss improvements/changes in the Mass Image Compressor in very brief here and will give detailed analysis in separate article.
The release of June 2025 have following changes/improvements:
1. WebP Compression Improvements
When Mass Image Compressor reduces image size, we have to optimize
- File Size
- Maintain Image Quality
- Compression Time
Balancing file size reduction, image quality, and compression speed is a delicate art. MIC prioritizes minimizing file size while maintaining the highest possible quality. At the same time, it carefully considers trade-offs to avoid significantly increasing compression time for marginal improvements, ensuring efficient and practical performance.
In our pursuit of better compression, we found that in many cases where PNG files are converted to WebP, reducing quality below 100% is often futile because lossless compression (100% quality) can sometimes produce smaller file sizes. MIC version 2.3 evaluates whether lossless compression results in a smaller file size than the user-selected quality setting. While this approach may slightly increase compression time, up to twice as long, it ensures optimal file size without compromising quality. With this release, Mass Image Compression will deliver most smaller logos and screenshots without any loss in quality while keeping the quality intact.
As you know, Mass Image Compressor seamlessly supports animated images so PNG . So this is applicable to animated PNG to WebP conversion also.
The same is applicable to GIF to WebP conversion also.
These changes do NOT apply to conversion other than GIF or PNG to WebP. To be more clear, your JPEG to WebP conversion remains same as before.
2. Underlying Library Version Updates
Mass Image Compressor relies on OxiPNG library for PNG compression. We have updated OxiPNG version from 9.1.2 to 9.1.5. The library is already stable, so improvements are also minor. You can check OxiPNG’s release notes. In our tests, we haven’t see any major difference in compression quality, size and speed. So these changes are minor.
We have also updated WebP library version which has performance and security related improvement.
With version 2.3, Mass Image Compressor continues to deliver efficient and high-quality compression on macOS, ensuring your images are optimized without compromising on speed or quality.
