We often realize the value of our photos only when we almost lose them. I learned this lesson the hard way after formatting the wrong partition and losing irreplaceable memories. That experience taught me the importance of organizing and backing up my photos in a reliable, accessible way.
Most of us accumulate photos fast – they’re memories, snapshots of moments we don’t want to forget. We may lean on cloud storage to keep them safe, but without structure, finding a specific image can be like searching for a needle in a haystack. For me, Mass Image Compressor (MIC) has been instrumental in setting up a system where I can organize and back up my photos in a manageable, space-saving way. I point MIC to the root directory of my photos, and it compresses the images, preserving the folder structure I’ve carefully built. This means I can keep everything accessible without filling up my drive, even for print-quality images.
Managing videos is another story, and it’s a challenge I also face. At the moment, I handle video compression with a batch script using FFmpeg on my laptop, which does the job but feels like a workaround. Integrating video compression into MIC is definitely on my to-do list, but balancing functionality with usability and code simplicity is key.
As someone who wears multiple hats—a software developer, former game designer, and occasional media technician – I often think of features that could make MIC even more powerful. But packing every idea into one tool without making the UI or code overly complex isn’t practical. Time will tell where MIC heads next, but it’s been a reliable solution for me and others for over 15 years, and I hope it continues to help people like us keep our memories safe and organized.
